How to clean a wool rug at home

Choose sunny and warm day to do this:

  1. Dust the rug with shaking, using strong commercial grade vacuum cleaner, or use a duster. Vacuum both front and back several times.
  2. Mix gentle, wool-safe detergent according to the direction on the label.
  3. Apply the the detergent and scrub lightly with a soft bristle brush.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with running water until the suds is out.
  5. Rinse Away Suds.
  6. Extract the water all the way
  7. Lay the rug flat in the sun and allow few days to dry.

Do this if you have enough resources to clean your rug without damaging it.  If the rug is wet for a long period, or wrong detergent is used, it could shrink, bleed, or wrinkle.

Seek professional help, if you are unsure.

As you know, silk needs a very gentle touch and the slightest carelessness may cause irreparable damage. Silk rugs are also more susceptible to the sunlight than other rugs, which can cause color fading and invisible damage to the integrity of the fiber.

To clean stains on silk rugs

  1. Dust the rug with shaking, strong commercial grade vacuum cleaner. Vacuum both front and back several times. You shouldn’t use a roller brush or beater at all.
  2. Mix gentle, silk-safe detergent according to the direction on the label.
  3. Heavily mist the stained area and apply the detergent.
  4. Scrub softly with a very soft  fabric until the stain is removed.
  5.  Heavily mist the affected area of the carpet and blot up the moisture. Repeat this process until the offending stain has (if you’re lucky) been completely removed
  6. Rinse the area thoroughly and extract the suds and water well.
  7.  don’t use hot water or steam to avoid shrinking.
  8. Lay the rug flat, facedown to dry.

These above method will work for cleaning some minor stains.  Do not take the risk for more serious stains, and consult a professional.

Before you start to spot clean your Oriental Rug, you need to know what your rug is, and what the stain is from.  It is not hard to remove a stain, but in order to avoid damage to the rug, it needs to be done right.  If you are unsure of the two important factors, let the professionals at Ariana Rug Cleaning help you.

  1. Act as soon as the spill makes the stain.
  2. Try to scoop or wipe as much of the spill as possible
  3. Do not rub the stain to avoid spreading it further
  4. Test your solution to make sure it does not make your rug bleed.  If you see any color on your white testing cloth, stop and seek professional help.
  5.  Using a white cloth, apply small amounts of the appropriate solution to the stain area until the stain is removed.  Don’t rub, you may wipe softly.
  6. Do nwet the rug.
  7. Blot frequently and continue applying solution until the stain is removed.  Some stains are very stubborn, so you might have to keep going for a longer time.
  8. Blot up any remaining solution and moisture or by  patting a dry and absorbent cloth.
  9. Let the rug air dry.

HOW TO care for your Nylon carpet

dust vacuumed from a wool oriental rug after vacuuming the back during rug cleaning process.

Your rugs work as filter for your house collecting all the dust, soil, dirt and small particles.   Regular vacuuming stops the soil and dirt from setting inside the rug pile and slowly damaging the fiber of your rug or carpet.

  1. A good quality vacuum cleaner should be able to eliminate this problem to a large degree.
  2. Try to vacuum the rug/carpet at least twice a week.  If it is in a heavy traffic area, vacuuming every day is recommended.
  3. Do not use the beater bar of the vacuum cleaner for silk, wool shag style rugs.  Use the suction only to lift and remove the dust and soil.
  4. For other types of rugs and carpets, you may use a vacuum with a beater bar.
  5. Vacuum under your area rug regularly.
  6. Take your area rug out side few times a year and shake it well, to get the excessive dust out.

Pet urine stain under the UV light after soaking the rug & professional cleaning.

No matter how confident you are about your trained pet, accidents happen. We all have gone through cleaning our pet urine from somewhere in our homes, or at least we have tried to clean it.

  1. Clean the urine as soon as the accident happen, as the urine is acidic and it will damage the fiber of your rug/carpet.
  2. frequently. and make sure not to use a hard brush on the beater bar.
  3. Put a few layers of observant towels on the urine to absorb  the urine from the rug.
  4. Make a solution of one cup of white vinegar, one cup of water and two spoons of baking soda.
  5. Apply the solution on the affected area  and let it settle for 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Blot with a cloth.

The above method will clean the surface of the rug/carpet, but the urine will stay in the fiber.  In the picture above, see the urine stain under the UV light on a rug after soaking the rug during the two washes.
